Hi all! Long time, no blog. But what better way to get back into it than to create a little Halloween story for a contest. And I’m being quite literal about the “little”. Below is my spooky submission for Susanna Leonard Hill’s 9th Annual Halloweensie Writing Contest. It’s such a fun way to challenge yourself to write within certain parameters. The parameters for this contest are: the story can be no more than 100 words long (See? Little.), must be for children (12 and under), and must use the words potion, cobweb, and trick. Let’s get on with it. Here’s my entry…
THE SCURRY TREAT
Scurry
Little furry
Legged creature on the floor.
Searching
Sometimes lurching
Wanting snacks and crumbs galore.
Crawling
Flinging, sprawling
Buggy eyes, it wants to score.
Scrummy
Always yummy
Candy near the ol’ front door.
Climbing
Perfect timing
In the bowl just right before.
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK
Giggles
Wiggle wriggles
Cowboy, pirate, dinosaur.
Clawing
Oohing aahing
Potions, cobwebs, black decor.
Greeting
Trick or treating
Digging in the bowl for more.
Tacky
Wicky wacky
Halloweeny treat or four.
Burrow
Being thorough
Feel a tickle, can’t ignore.
AHHHHHHHH!
Running
Flailing
Crying
Wailing
No use waiting
As it’s escaping
Scary cockroach on the floor.
Wow, wasn’t expecting the cockroach twist! Good luck!
Glad I could surprise you!
Not trick or treating at that house! The cockroach was quite a twist. Good luck.
At least until they spray for bugs.
This one was so much fun that I read it aloud twice. Love the word choices throughout and the twist.
Thank you, Sarah!
Great flow and word choice. Scary ending!
Super fun! Love the rhyme and rhythm.
I agree! I read it once, but I had to go back and read it aloud. SUCH a fun read-a-loud!
Loved this, Lindsay! Simple words with quite a punch and great rhythm. Cockroaches? Eww! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Love the rhythm…hate the roach! Terrific Halloween tale. best of luck to you.
Fabulous read aloud! And nice twist at the end. Sweet!
Having lived in NYC the cockroach is my absolute worst nightmare! Your wording was so much fun, I felt like I was riding, and bouncing along merrily…until the end! Great twist! Best of luck!
I love the rhythm in this! A perfect ode to the scariest little creepy crawly of all time. 🙂
